These lists were put together once we had established the origin of most of the cartridges we collected over the years, and we are very much aware that they are far from complete. The other information which will help you to determine its origin are the shell's measurements base, bottom, top and sometimes neck diameter and full length. Please drop us a line if you happen to have additional information for us on the subject. Collecting socalled 'live ammunition' is in most countries forbidden.

You need to have a special permit to do so check with your local police-station.

Illegal possession of ammunition is considered to be a criminal act. You might end up with a heavy fine, and the chance of going to jail not to mention the confiscation of your whole collection. Also take in consideration that in case of a fire your insurance-company might simply refuse to pay out. It is not worth the risk. Be warned! TOP Identification First of all you need to understand that every type of wapen has most of the time its own specific cartridge, either as complete unit or as separate parts: shell, primer, charge and projectile.

For determination we use two basics: the case shape and dimensions. Designed by Colonel Hiram S. Destinctive feature of this type of primer is that the anvil forms part of the cartridge case.

A number of flasholes alongside it permits the ignition flame to pass from the primer cap to the body of the case which contains the main charge. This type of primer is used in almost every military ammunition.

This design makes use of an anvil which is a separate component forming part of the primer. The case itself has one single flas hole to allow the flash from the primer to pass. More difficult to manufacture but can easily be removed thus allowing the case to be re-used more easily. Often found in commercial ammunition.

Well thanks guys. The maker is almost always identified. Military ammunition usually includes date information, and civilian ammunition often has caliber information. Sometimes the caliber information is either spelled out or abbreviated ; 38 SPL, etc. Sometimes information on the headstamp indicates the type of load VII Z on. Sometimes markings are deliberately deceiving, as with some. Sometimes the headstamp only indicates the maker of the cartridge case, or distributor of the loaded cartridge, or the using activity, not the actual "manufacturer" of a loaded cartridge.

Even collectors with years of experience and extensive reference libraries end up with a few cartridges they cannot identify, so don't feel bad if you cannot identify everything. The following headstamps have been reported to exist, but it is strongly suspected they do not occur on small arms ammunition.

If you have encountered this code on any ammunition, even if it is not small arms ammunition, please contact us with the details. References cited in the right hand column:. Headstamp Codes Codes are listed by number codes, then in alphabetical order from A to Z, followed by a list of suspect codes at the end.

As the round was recently made available to the public, we had to check it out. Using a grain flat nose full metal jacketed bullet, the 9x19mm Luger round has a distinctive shape. The company has long been in the 9mm biz for the U.

In chronographic testing, we found the M Active Duty sample sent to us clocked in at a mean average ofwithin 10 fps or so of the advertised range. As the Pentagon is also buying the Winchester-produced companion M 9mm round in quantity— which uses a grain jacketed-hollow-point bullet— for use in the MHS series of pistols, the M is more of a training round— at least on the commercial market.

The box is even marked as such. With that in mind, we did not run penetration or expansion ballistics testing on these flat nose full metal jacketed rounds.

Winchester advises to only use the M in modern 9mm firearms in good condition as they run a pressure that is 10 to 15 percent higher than standard industry pressure for 9mm Luger. Similarly, no squibs or hangfires were encountered, which is always a good thing. We ran the Active Duty through not only a P but also a bunch of other 9mm handguns we had around. In something of a test for the military-grade primer, we submerged 10 rounds of M in distilled water for hours.

Such a requirement is often seen in government contracts for testing duty rounds.

The cartridges measured to spec after said dunking and showed no signs of swelling. All fired successfully from a fixture under controlled conditions with no issues to report. When it comes to practical accuracy, we consistently were able to eat out the center of a silhouette target at ranges to 25 yards, unsupported.
